Saturday Surgeries
The 'Saturday Surgeries' Surgical Waiting List Relief Initiative
Background:
The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is well known nationally and internationally for the complex surgical procedures performed on children from all of the surgical specialities. Due to the Hospital’s excellent reputation for healing critically ill children, there is a huge demand for the Hospital’s services resulting in extremely long surgical waiting lists.
Problem:
These long surgical waiting lists often lead to procedures such as ENT and General Paediatric Clinical cases, which are less critical, being postponed to make place for intricate, lifesaving operations that must take preference due to time constraints and the scarcity of beds. This creates a long, unmanageable waiting list that may eventually result in minor surgical conditions becoming critical cases.
Solution:
To conduct an 8 week Saturday Surgeries Surgical Waiting List Relief Initiative, beginning in October 2012 to alleviate the extensive waiting lists for life-changing procedures at the Hospital.
Budget:
Surgeries over 8 weeks, dedicated to ENT and General Paediatric procedures will cost a total of R264 000.00.
Timeline:
This initiative will run for 8 weeks starting on Saturday, 22nd October 2012 ending Saturday, 10 December 2012.
