African Paediatric Fellowship Programme
African Paediatric Fellowships Programme (APFP) Background: The African Paediatric Fellowships Programme (APFP) was created in 2007 to develop capacity in clinical services, research and training in child health in Africa. The continuation of the programme is dependent on donor funding for the next three years. A total of 20 Fellows will be trained during 2011 to 2013 amounting to 30 training years. Problem: Globally, childhood illness is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. The World Health Organisation estimates that approximately 10,6million children under 5 years of age die each year. The overwhelming burden of severe childhood diseases and associated deaths occur in resource limited countries. Amongst resource limited nations the burden is heavily skewed towards Africa where almost half of childhood deaths occur. Solution: APFP intends to partner with as many medical academic African institutions as is feasible, where there is an identified need for medical specialists and sub-specialists. It aims to empower skilled health care professionals to use their knowledge gained to lobby for improving child health in their home institutions. Budget: This 3 year programme will cost a total of R6.8 million. Timeline: The application is a multi-year project from 2011-2013 For more information on this project please click Philippa Douglas
