'Kids for Kids' Initiative Gets Kids Eating Fish to Help Sick Kids
Healthy kids are sitting down to a sumptuous Seafood Banquet in order to help sick kids get better. Celebrities and their kids will be joined by Sea Paw the polar bear and Splash the penguin on National Children’s Day to raise funds for desperately sick children through the Children’s Hospital Trust, which fundraises for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and Paediatric healthcare in the Western Cape.
Last year the campaign raised R295 000 which contributed to the building of a new Surgical Skills Training Centre at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, which is the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa to offer training in paediatric Endoscopic Surgery.
The funds from this year’s campaign, which runs from 01 November 2011 to 29 February 2012, have been earmarked for the upgrade of the B1 General Medical Ward, one of the busiest wards at the hospital, and will go a long way towards improving the facilities for sick children. The banquet which features fabulous themed seafood prepared by the Grade 6 and 7 pupils St Joseph’s Marist College in Rondebosch will be held to launch the annual Kids for Kids initiative sponsored by Sea Harvest in partnership with the Children’s Hospital Trust.
Sea Harvest will donate 10c of the sale of every box of Sea Harvest Fish Fingers, Fish Burgers, Fish Cakes, Surfers and Hake Bakes sold nationwide, to the Children’s Hospital Trust.
Felix Ratheb, Sea Harvest Marketing & Sales Director says the Children’s Hospital Trust has made a significant difference to so many children’s lives. “We are very proud to be associated with the Children’s Hospital Trust. Last year we raised R295 872 to contribute towards building the new Surgical Skills Training Centre and are very proud of this achievement. This year, an upgrade of Ward B1 will make the world of difference to towards improving the facilities for sick children. This ward specialises in the treatment of general medical patients, patients with infectious diseases, and those with chronic illnesses. 25% of admitted children are HIV positive and 15% are infected with tuberculosis.”
“Our products are favourites of all children and Sea Harvest has always focused on education, with attention to good nutrition for children. We are also committed to environmentally-friendly and sustainable fishing practices. We really want to make a difference in the markets in which we operate and good corporate practices are part of our everyday operations,” he said.
“The Children’s Hospital Trust is thrilled to partner with Sea Harvest for the second year running in their ‘Kids for Kids’ fundraising promotion. 100% of funds raised will go towards the upgrade of the 55 year old General Medical Wards at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. These are at times the busiest wards treating the Hospital’s youngest and sickest patients who often have infectious diseases. What makes this partnership even more special is that not only do kids get to eat tasty fish meals, but they will also be helping ensure that sick children continue to get the very best medical care at the Hospital’, says Louise Driver, CEO of the Children’s Hospital Trust.
