Local Pick ‘n Pay Shopper Wins R24 000
The Children’s Hospital Trust recently announced the winner of our ‘R5 Win Free Groceries for a Year' Competition. Thanks to the amazing generosity of the community in the Western Cape supporters this year’s competition raised a phenomenal R142 767.53 towards the purchasing of surgical equipment for the new Operating Theatre Complex currently under construction at the Hospital.
The competition took place between January and March 2009 in all Western Cape Pick ‘n Pay Stores as well as on their online shopping website. Shoppers were encouraged to donate R5 to stand in line to win the awesome grand prize of a year’s free groceries! The ecstatic winner, Mrs Michelle Behne of Wellington, was the lucky shopper drawn in the Claremont store out of over 20 000 entries! Michelle has won free groceries for a year to the value of R24 000 (R2000 per month) generously sponsored by Pick n Pay and I&J.
Once again, Plumstead Pick ‘n Pay pulled out all the stops and sold the most coupons - raising the most money for charity out of all Pick ‘n Pay stores.
The 2009 winner, Mrs Michelle Behne, from Wellington bought her lucky entry coupon in the Wellington Pick ‘n Pay store. Mrs Behne said she was ‘totally shocked and speechless when called out of her Grade 3 Classroom at Huguenot Primary in Wellington by the Principal to receive the good news’. Michelle says that she had only entered the competition three times and had forgotten all about it. As the proud mom of 6 year old twins, Michelle said she would certainly make good use of the R24 000 prize.
Michelle recently visited the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital to receive her prize and met some of the little patients. Until now, Michelle had only ever read about the Hospital and had never visited. Michelle is looking forward to telling her Grade 3 students all about the Hospital and the miracles that are performed there on a daily basis in the only dedicated specialist paediatric hospital in southern Africa.
"This was the fifth year that Pick 'n Pay staged this special promotion and it is always our pleasure to assist the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. The added bonus with this initiative is that our customers can help raise much- needed funds for the Hospital and also stand the chance of winning free groceries for a year. It is important to us that we reward our customers for their generosity towards the broader community." explains Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, Transformation Director at Pick n Pay.
“Pick n Pay and I&J have been involved with the Hospital for many years, and we would like to thank them for their ongoing support of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. It is largely through community support that a promotion such as this can be a success. The Trust is most grateful to the generosity of all our donors and looks forward to their ongoing support, so that the Trust can continue to assist the Hospital with critical priority projects,” says Nicky Bishop CEO at the Children’s Hospital Trust.
