“R5 Win A Years Supply of Groceries” Competition

From 19 January to 28 February 2009 shoppers can leave Pick n Pay stores with more than just a trolley full of groceries. By purchasing a R5 donation coupon at check–out counters in stores around the Western Cape, customers can shop with a happy heart knowing that they are helping the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Shoppers will be able to make an immediate donation to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital by simply ‘purchasing’ a donation slip and adding it to their shopping bill. They will also stand the chance of winning free groceries for a year! This amazing prize is valued at R24 000 (that’s R2000 per month) and has generously been sponsored by Pick n Pay and I&J.

The promotion will be staged in all corporate, family, clothing and express stores in the Western Cape as well as the Brackenfell and Ottery Hypermarket stores. For the first time ever the promotion will also be open to Pick n Pay’s online home shoppers who can enter online and make a difference in the lives of the children at the Hospital without leaving their home!

Each R5 donation slip is bar coded and run through the tills like any other product. Shoppers are given the opportunity win free groceries for a year by putting the donation slip, along with that day’s grocery receipt, into the Children’s Hospital Trust’s entry box at the information counter. 100% of the funds raised in this competition will go towards the Trust’s current fundraising project which is the purchasing of equipment for the new Operating Theatre Complex.

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital was built in 1956 and while it is undisputedly a leading light on the African continent in caring for sick children, it is now more than 50 years old. Surgical methods are continuously changing and the Hospital needs to keep abreast of modern techniques in the surgical field. An upgraded and expanded Operating Theatre Complex will allow surgeons to perform surgery with greater efficiency to accommodate the sickest children in South Africa. The new Operating Theatre Complex which will also ensure that the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital retains the standards of paediatric surgical excellence for which the Hospital is renowned.

"This is the fifth year Pick n Pay is staging this special promotion and it is always our pleasure to assist the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. “Pick n Pay has been involved with the Hospital for many years, and we would like to thank them for their ongoing support of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. It is largely through community support that a promotion such as this can be a success. We appeal to shoppers in the Western Cape to support this initiative and help us get our children back home where they belong,” says Nicky Bishop CEO at the Children’s Hospital Trust.
