Upgrade of D1 Specialist Surgical Ward

The building and renovation of the Hospital's D1 Specialist Surgical Ward began in March 2010 and is due for completion in October 2010. This vital ward upgrade was made possible by the Trust successfully fundraising for the building and equipping costs of R9.2 million.

The D1 Specialist Surgical Ward currently handles approximately 180 admissions per month. Patient conditions range from critically ill to stable, with ages ranging from newborn to early teens. Children are admitted pre– and post–surgeries which include orthopaedic, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, cardiothoracic, plastics, cardiac and hand surgery. Ward D1 caters for more patients than any other in-patient ward at the Hospital.

Ward D1 has not been upgraded since 1956 and even though it was unable to meet modern surgical & nursing needs hospital staff always strived to provide the very best medical, surgical and nursing care – with the shortest hospitalization possible.

This upgrade will greatly increase the wards effectiveness and efficiency. The nature of the patient load, varied patient type and activity in D1 further emphasizes the fact that an upgrade was critical. Especially as the ward plays a significant role in providing the best possible training for all medical of staff, families and plays an active role in research and rehabilitation.
