At age 3 Aiden Malumbo suddenly collapsed at his home and was rushed to a private hospital in Cape Town. He was subsequently referred to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and within 72 hours was diagnosed with a high-risk brain tumour.
Aiden’s case was particularly complex as the tumour was large and was growing in close proximity to the brain stem and spinal cord. An emergency neurological surgical procedure was performed to remove fluid build-up on the brain and help relieve the pressure that was causing his low levels of consciousness. A second 6-hour operation followed to remove most of the harmful tumour.
After a short stint in ICU, Aiden regained consciousness and, a few weeks later had a course of radiotherapy to further reduce the remainder of the tumour. Now more than 6 years later, Aiden is completely recovered and enjoys spending time on his Sony PlayStation.
The Red Cross War Memorial Hospital needs your help in order to continue excellent work like this.
