In July 2007, Shukrie Sonday and his two younger brothers were involved in a dreadful liquid explosion. Not only did Shukrie lose both his brothers in the fire, but he also sustained burns to 80% of his body.
After the accident Shukrie was immediately referred to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and arrived by ambulance at the Trauma Unit. At the time doctors felt he had a very low chance of survival, but a team of specialists rallied around to give him their most expert care.
Over a period of more than 6 months, Shukrie underwent countless operations and skin grafts – including the use of synthetic skin and special dressings. It’s been a hard journey for Shukrie and his family, but with ongoing support from a dedicated rehabilitation crew – a physiotherapist, aromatherapist, music therapist and cultural therapist – he is well on the way to a full recovery and looks forward to playing the trumpet again soon.
The Red Cross War Memorial Hospital is a beacon of hope for children like Shukrie Sonday. Find out what you can do to help the children who turn to this hospital for hope.
