Aloshay’s Journey: Resilience and Hope

Aloshay Arendse is a 15-year-old girl with a remarkable story of resilience and hope, shaped by her experiences at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. A long-time patient of the Hospital, Aloshay has faced significant health challenges, including a previous cochlear transplant, a liver transplant in 2011, and most recently, a combined liver-renal transplant.

Throughout her journey, Aloshay has undergone numerous CT scans, which are crucial for monitoring her health and identifying any complications. Most recently, a CT scan was performed to investigate her increasing liver enzymes. The results were concerning; they showed a blockage in the portal vein near the liver, which had led to swollen veins and bleeding. Thanks to the timely detection of this problem through the CT scan, Aloshay was able to have a balloon procedure. This involves using a thin tube with a small balloon on the end, which is inserted into the blocked vein and then inflated to open it up. This less invasive method allowed her to avoid more complicated open surgery.

Today, Aloshay is doing well, a testament to her strength and the exceptional care she has received at the Hospital. Her mother, who has been a constant source of support throughout her medical journey, expresses her gratitude for the dedication of the healthcare team. “They’ve always been there for us,” she says. “It’s comforting to know that Aloshay is in good hands.”

Despite the challenges, Aloshay remains determined to embrace life. Her journey through surgeries and treatments has not defined her; rather, it has equipped her with a sense of purpose and hope for the future. With the on-going support of her family and the dedicated staff at the Hospital, Aloshay continues to inspire those around her, demonstrating that resilience can lead to recovery and renewed hope.

As she looks forward to new adventures, Aloshay’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of timely medical intervention and compassionate care. The CT scanner played a crucial role in her healing by allowing for the early detection of her condition, which enabled swift treatment. At the Hospital, patients like Aloshay receive not only the medical treatment they need but also the emotional support essential for their recovery. This highlights the vital need for continued fundraising efforts to ensure that the Hospital is equipped with the necessary technology to provide the best care possible.
