Meet Iminathi

Iminathi: God stands with us

Little 3-year-old baby girl Iminathi is currently recovering at the only specialised Burns Unit in Southern Africa, which is at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, in the Western Cape.

“It was early Friday morning when we were preparing to get ready for the day. While my little one was also up to her normal routine, she pulled the kettle and in an instant, the hot boiling kettle water fell off the countertop, all over her.” – says her mother filled with grief.

That day turned out to be most traumatic for the family, after the little princess started screaming as her body filled with pain. Her mother in anguish, frantically rushed her little one to Khayelitsha District Hospital which is near where they live. The doctor immediately started cleaning her wounds and the medical professionals started communicating with the Red Cross Children’s Hospital – they shared photos and other details to help to make sure the little one received the best care possible. Later that evening, after Iminathi had been stablised, she was transferred with an ambulance to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital for further treatments at the state-of-the-art Burns Unit.

Iminathi is on her way to recovery and has a few more weeks at the Hospital, and while she’s still in a little pain, her mother is right by her side. Her mother says this experience could have been worse, but she believes that Uminati lives up to her name which means “God stands with us.”  She is truly grateful for the help she has been receiving and for the hospital that continues to support her.

“We must stay with our children and love them. Thank you so much for all the help and for healing my little one,” says Iminathi’s mother to other parents with their little ones.

Now on her journey to recovery, Iminathi will also receive extra care from the physio department to help her skin recover its elasticity and sensory touch. The use of therapeutic play will help little ones like her throughout their journey to health.
