Thank you for considering a donation to the Children’s Hospital Trust.

When you donate to the Trust, 100% of your donation goes towards specific projects that directly benefit the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and prioritised paediatric healthcare needs. More Ways to Help

Leave a Gift in Your Will

Your legacy: legacies are one of our most critical sources of long-term funding for the Trust, enabling us to plan for the Hospital’s future needs.

Preparing a will is a very personal and confidential exercise, and naturally you would use your will to benefit your family and loved ones first. However, you may also wish to consider including a charitable bequest to an institution that you have supported during your lifetime, or one that is close to your heart.

For more information, click on the links below or contact Pauline Solomons on 021 686 7860.

More information

It’s a common misconception that only wealthy people leave money in their will to charity when they pass away. The reality is that most charitable bequests are made by ordinary people who want to make a positive difference after they’re gone, after first taking care of their loved ones.

So whoever you are, whatever your situation, isn’t it good to know that you can help sick and injured children at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital by including the Children’s Hospital Trust in your will?

Tax Benefits

Bequests to charitable institutions are also exempt from tax and may lead to savings in the amount of estate duty payable, if your estate amounts to more than R3.5 million. We recommend you consult an attorney to have your will drafted or updated.

The Red Cross Children’s Hospital is one of the world’s leading tertiary children’s hospitals working to save children’s lives in South Africa and across the African continent.

With your legacy gift we can continue to train doctors and nurses from around the continent, provide state-of-the-art equipment, build upgrades, and support new treatment projects and ground-breaking medical interventions.

Circle of Life Children's Hospital TrustOur Circle of Life programme is designed to bring together those who are planning to leave a legacy for the Children’s Hospital Trust. It will give these special individuals an opportunity to get to know the inner workings of the Hospital, meet the dedicated staff and see first-hand some of the heart-warming miracles that take place at this amazing place of healing.

Creating a will is the only way you can be sure that your wishes will be followed after you pass away.  If you don’t draw up a will, part or all of your estate may end up going to people you never intended it to benefit, because the law will dictate how your estate is distributed.

We recommend that you consult your own professional adviser to have your will drafted or updated. You can use this guide to help you make your will.

Including a charitable gift in your will is very straightforward, and can give you significant estate tax benefits.

You may decide to update your existing will using a codicil. Please select one of the following:

  • Residuary Legacy – A gift of the remainder of your estate, or a percentage, after all other legacies have been made and debts have been cleared.
  • Monetary Legacy – You can also choose to leave a specific sum of money, also known as a pecuniary gift, which you can arrange to be increased in line with inflation.
  • Asset Legacy – This is the gift of something valuable like a property, a piece of jewellery or stocks and shares.

People from all walks of life tell us that they are leaving a legacy to the Children’s Hospital Trust in their will.

Some because they were patients at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital at some stage since it’s opening in 1956, or were parents, grandparents or relatives of patients, as well as nurses and doctors who have worked at the Hospital.

What is clear is that everyone’s experience of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital is very special.

“The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital has so many family connections for me… a sort of home from home, as it were.  I know how much it meant to my father who was one of the founders of the Hospital. To him, any child saved was so important. I want this wonderful place to continue long after I have gone and intend leaving money in my will to the Children’s Hospital Trust. I hope that many other people will consider doing the same thing.” – Mrs Clemmie Hannay-Robertson

We would love to hear your story about why the Red Cross Children’s Hospital has a special place in your heart.

When you leave a legacy gift in your will to the Children’s Hospital Trust, your name, or that of a loved one in whose name you would like to leave a dedication, will be honoured with a special memoriam plaque in our Garden of Remembrance at the Hospital. The Book of Remembrance records the names of legacy donors and is kept on public display in the reception area of the Children’s Hospital Trust.

Should you like to tell us about a gift left in your will, we promise to keep this information in absolute confidence. It will not lead to intrusive communications or assumptions about your future intentions, which may change with time.

We will ensure that whatever the value of your gift, it will achieve its full potential by honouring your wishes.

All donations and gifts made to the Children’s Hospital Trust are used entirely for the benefit of the Hospital, not a cent is used for administration costs.

See our Legacy Charter for more information about leaving us a legacy gift.

Should any of your clients be considering the inclusion of a charitable bequest or testamentary trust when drafting their will or updating an existing will, please consider including the Children’s Hospital Trust in your consultations. We will provide you with a Legal and Financial Professionals information folder on request.

The Children’s Hospital Trust is registered as a public benefit organisation (PBO) in terms of section 30 of the Income Tax Act (PBO No 930 004 493) and therefore bequests left to the Trust may be eligible for deduction from the value of the estate when determining estate duty.

Donate in memory: family, friends and colleagues often try and find a way to cherish the life of their loved ones in an impactful and unforgettable way.

Making an in-memoriam donation is a special way to appreciate their memory. Through an in-memoriam donation, you can continue to share the legacy of those that hold a special place in your heart.

Every in-memoriam donation of R5000 or more is acknowledged with an individually engraved plaque in the beautiful Garden of Remembrance at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and in the Roll of Honour read at the Trust’s annual Day of Remembrance service.

The family of the deceased will be notified (if you wish) of your generous donation, which is tax deductible.

Or contact Pauline Solomons on 021 686 7860

Community Fundraising

The Children’s Hospital Trust holds events throughout the year to raise funds for the paediatric healthcare needs of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. We are fortunate that many other organisations, companies and individuals also come on board by hosting their own events in honour of the Children’s Hospital Trust, which aids our fundraising efforts.

Before linking the Children’s Hospital Trust or the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital brands to your event, consent will need to be obtained from the Trust. All community fundraising event organisers must complete an event application guideline & protocol form. Upon approval, all event organisers will be issued with a Letter of Authorisation on a Trust letterhead.

Please contact Pauline Solomons for more information.
