Meet Naeem
Brave Boy, Play On!
Sundays at Grandpa’s is always fun. And sometimes when you’re having so much fun, it seems nothing can go wrong.
Naeem is an energetic, bright-eyed young boy who loves playing soccer. In fact, he dreams of being a professional player one day. Who wouldn’t want to play their favourite game all day long? It was while he was playing in his granddad’s backyard that he slipped and fell on his arm. The fall itself was not very alarming, and although Naeem complained that his arm was sore, it seemed due to the initial impact and some bruising. It was only two days later that he couldn’t move his wrist. Mom, Nuraan, immediately made an appointment with their local GP. After a swift examination, their GP referred them to the Emergency Centre at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital for x-rays. Since Naeem already had a folder at the Children’s Hospital from a previous visit, the process was faster and very quickly it was established that he had a small fracture in his wrist and would need a cast.
“We were out in under two hours,” says Nuraan. According to this mom, it was “very good service”.
A week and a half after their Emergency Centre visit, Naeem and Nuraan returned to the Children’s Hospital to have the cast removed and a bandage applied. Happy with the healing at his last check-up, Naeem is taking it as slowly as he can, but Mom says he’s already having fun with friends and playing soccer again.
The beauty of children and how they grow and develop is that there’s just no stopping them. We trust this natural and automatic process. But when obstacles arise, there is a team at the Children’s Hospital who take every opportunity to help, heal and hold space for children and their families in the worst moments of their lives.
Nuraan talks about the memories she has of her daughter’s journey at the Oncology ward. Coming back to the Children’s Hospital is always going to be hard for this mom. She has seen bravery, and she has shown bravery.
Children need their parents every day, and some days children and their parents need hospitals like Red Cross. With every donation, you make it possible for them to be brave and to help children like Naeem to turn his dream of playing with his friends into a reality!
