Serving Kindness: Kaltuma Jedaar’s Mission to Make Every Meal Matter

Kaltuma Jedaar, known affectionately as Cole Toma, has been a pillar of warmth and comfort at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital for nearly three years. As the operator of the Hospital’s cafeteria, her days are filled with constant activity, beginning as early as a quarter to six in the morning and often not ending until late in the evening. Yet, despite the long hours and the bustling nature of her work, Kaltuma remains deeply committed to the community she serves.
The cafeteria, which has evolved from a simple coffee shop to a vibrant and essential part of the Hospital, is a haven for everyone who walks through its doors. Whether it’s the dedicated doctors, hardworking staff, or anxious parents, Kaltuma’s presence and the welcoming atmosphere she fosters provide a much-needed respite. “We have our regulars,” she says with a smile, “even the parents. Sometimes they tell us their children just want to come to the Hospital because they want to visit the cafeteria. It’s so nice to hear.”
Kaltuma’s journey to the Hospital’s cafeteria was not without challenges. Before taking on this role, she and her husband ran their own shops, which they were forced to close during the COVID-19 pandemic. The opportunity to manage the Hospital’s cafeteria came through a long-time friend, and it was a chance Kaltuma embraced with gratitude. “We were so grateful when this opportunity came along,” she reflects. “It’s been going well, and we appreciate the business.”
The cafeteria is more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it’s a space where Kaltuma makes a difference in the lives of those who come through, particularly the children. She shares heartwarming stories of kids who find joy in their visits, like the boy in a wheelchair who became a regular visitor even after his discharge. “He came here one day, all the way from home, just to get his favorite chips and chocolate,” Kaltuma recalls fondly. “It was his birthday, and he wanted to celebrate here. Moments like that make it all worthwhile.”
Kaltuma’s dedication extends beyond the usual expectations of her role. She often goes out of her way to help those who may be struggling, offering food or a comforting word to parents and children who have been at the Hospital for extended periods. “I don’t want to blow my own horn,” she says humbly, “but it makes a difference when you can offer something nice to eat or a cup of coffee to someone who’s been here for months. That’s how we can make a difference.”
Running the cafeteria comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to managing reliable staff. Kaltuma, who juggles multiple responsibilities from cooking to customer service, finds this aspect of her job particularly demanding. “I have to be everywhere in this kitchen,” she explains, “and making sure my staff can handle any type of customer is important to me. It’s a big challenge, but it’s part of what we do.”
Despite the pressures, Kaltuma remains focused on her mission to provide affordable, quality food to everyone at the Hospital. She keeps prices low so that everyone can afford a meal, and if someone can’t, she finds a way to make it work. This commitment to accessibility and kindness has made the cafeteria a beloved part of the Hospital community.
Reflecting on her time at the Hospital, Kaltuma expresses a deep sense of fulfillment. “It’s not just about serving food; it’s about being part of something bigger, making a difference in people’s lives,” she says. The doctors and staff often speak highly of the cafeteria, and Kaltuma is proud to contribute to the positive environment of the Hospital. “They talk about our food and our prices, and it’s nice to know we’re appreciated.”
For Kaltuma Jedaar, the Hospital’s cafeteria is more than just a workplace; it’s a place where she can bring comfort, joy, and a sense of community to those who need it most. Her story is a testament to the power of kindness, dedication, and the belief that even the smallest acts of generosity can have a profound impact on the lives of others.
