Meet Indabele

Soon I’ll be heading to the Playground

Indabele is a precious little one from Crossroads, a small township on the border of Nyanga in the Western Cape.

At just eight months old, his big, dreamy eyes are what make his mother’s heart melt. When Indabele’s mother was pregnant, she had a normal pregnancy and she was filled with excitement for the little one to join his family with two other siblings.

In February 2022, Indabele was born but there were some alarming concerns at his arrival. The doctors at the Mowbray Maternity Hospital observed that there were abnormalities in his spinal cord and the development of some of his vertebrae (the 33 individual, interlocking bones that form the spinal column).

The little baby was consequently transferred to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, where various neurosurgery and MRI scans were done to provide little Indabele with the best care possible and most importantly, to help him grow in a way that would provide him comfort and a healthy journey during the most pivotal stages of his development.

With the help of the specialised medical staff at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, the family is waiting patiently for the results and the way forward to treat his condition.

Little Indabele will be seen by the Orthopaedic Department and the Physiotherapy Department who will provide him with the proper stimulation to strengthen his muscles and bones. These two departments often use play to help treat little ones, as play is the main occupation of any child.

At the Children’s Hospital Trust we believe that every child should have access to the highest quality healthcare services close to their homes and feel safe and comforted during times of illness and trauma. They should be cared for in a nurturing environment that is supportive of patient, family and staff wellbeing by skilled and supported healthcare professionals equipped with the infrastructure and equipment needed to provide optimal care.

Thanks to our generous donors, parents like Lizeka can trust that their little one receives high-quality healthcare and look forward to playing with their little one in a dream Therapeutic Playground.
