As this is being written, an 11-month old baby has been in the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital for a month. He was admitted to the hospital after suffering burns from a bucket of hot water. The little fighter has 14% burns on his body.
In this video Dr Yolandi Ferreira, Medical Officer at the Hospital’s trauma ward in the Emergency Centre, explains that burns patients are especially delicate. They have special needs in terms of how their wounds are dressed and at the same time need to be treated for the pain and anxiety they experience during that process.
The Emergency Centre, which is the first point of entry to the Hospital, is currently undergoing an upgrade and expansion. The upgrade will make provision for an area in the centre where children suffering from burns injuries can be treated in the best possible conditions – a child and family friendly, comforting and private area.
Dr Ferreira’s wish for the Emergency Centre is a dedicated temperature-controlled room where burns patients can be washed, their dressings changed, and pain and anxiety can be managed.
More than 90% of the patients admitted to the Hospital start their treatment journey at the Emergency Centre. That’s why it’s so important to give the teams everything they need to keep maintaining world-class standards of treatment. You can help improve their environment to make it even easier to treat the little victims of burns.
The build comes at a cost of R 122 million of which R 84 milion has already been raised thanks to generous donors. You too can #Leave_YourMark On Life by donating towards this project – every cent counts.
